My Palette:

Titanium White

Mars Black

Bright Red

Primary Yellow

Phthalo Blue

Brushes:

1” Flat, ½” Flat, Small Detail

First Step is to mix the “Mother Color” a neutral mix of your primary colors, you will mix a small amount of this mother color into each of the colors you use.

To mix the Mother Color: start with Yellow, add a smaller amount of Red, and even less Blue. Mix well (palette knife works best here) and once the pigments are combined, take a tiny bit of your mother color and white and mix.  You should have a very neutral looking grey/brown.  If the color looks green - add red.  If it looks purple - add yellow.  If it looks really orange, add blue.

Background:

Let’s get started by mixing a light blue (White+Blue) for the sky, add a tiny bit of your Mother Color.  Use your daddy brush and create a horizon line.  Brush the blue above the horizon line and scrub a bit into the corner and along the edges. Dry. Use your Mama brush and White and scrub in a few clouds - small amounts of paint help, and remember that simple clouds are rounded forms on top usually flat bottoms.

Let’s work with Yellow next, add a tiny bit of your Mother Color. Scrub this above the horizon line, focusing on areas where the white of the canvas is showing.  On the bottom of the canvas, use horizontal brush strokes and yellow, leaving an area for the path open.

Now let’s work with Orange (Yellow+Red) and add a bit of your Mother Color.  Again, scrubbing through the top of the canvas, and adding bits to the ground area.  Remember not to paint over all the yellow, we want bits of yellow peaking through. Scrub/Brush Orange near the horizon creating diagonal/triangular shapes, this creates the vanishing point.

Now let’s use Red with a little bit of the Mother Color mixed in.  Apply a good amount of the Red along the top of the canvas, and then scrub, tap more foliage. Add Red through the triangles framing the disappearing point.

Paint in your Path with your Mother Color, and then add that at the horizon.

Paint Your Rims 🙂

Tree:

Add a tiny bit of Black to your Palette.  Use your Mother Color plus a small amount of Black to paint in your Foreground Tree.  Paint a nice thick trunk with your Mama brush and add lots of branches with your Baby Brush.  I had the branches poking in and out of the foliage, if it’s easier, you can have the branches as a full line and stipple color over them later. Add Bark texture using the Mother Color plus a small amount of white with your Baby Brush.

Paint in super simple Trees along the horizon, just the trunk or a trunk and a couple of branches.

Final Details:

Give your foliage and vegetation another go, if you have bald areas, add more color.

Use the Mother Color+Black to add shadow to your path, and use white to add some highlights.

Finish by adding the carving on the tree.
