Mistletoe Mice Acrylic Painting Tutorial Instructions

My Palette:

Titanium White

Mars Black

Bright Red

Primary Yellow

Phthalo Blue

*If you are using craft paint grab the colors you see in the example - White, Black, Brown, Red, Green, etc.

Brushes:

Large Flat, Medium Flat, Small Detail

Paper towels/Rags, Paint water cup, Canvas

Other helpful materials:

Palette Knife, Hair Dryer

Background:

Start by wetting your canvas with you Daddy brush, then apply a thin coat of white all over the background using vertical strokes.

Next mix a brown: Yellow+small amount of Red+tiny bit of black

Use the Daddy brush and brown and streak it vertically through the top of the canvas, using small amounts as you go. Next, esta

blish the ground with a horizontal line of brown in the bottom quarter of the canvas. Use brown and white horizontally through the bottom of the canvas.

Paint your rims.

Use the slender edge of your Mama brush or your baby brush and Brown to make vertical lines for the board separations.  Use your Baby brush and Brown to make the knots in the wood.

Mistletoe:

Mix a Green: Yellow+Blue+Small Amount of Black

Use your Mama brush and Green to create a few stems, and then make lots of leaves using the green.

Bow:

Mix a Dark Red: Red+Tiny bit of Black

Use your Mama Brush and make the center of the bow, I made a heart.  Grab a tiny amount of black in the corner of your bristles, and brush a tiny bit of black around the outside of the heart.

Use the Mama brush and Dark Red and make your Bow. Again, shadow with tiny bits of black.  Make the long ribbons on the sides and shadow. (There is no wrong way to do this!! If your bow doesn’t look exactly like mine, that’s normal. Trust the process.)

Mice:

Mix a grey: White+Small amount of Black

Create two tear drop shapes with grey and your Mama brush for the mice. Fill with Grey. Paint in the ears with grey and paint tails. Brush bits of white for the mouse belly, and through the other mouse’s behind. Use the baby brush and grey to make the mouse’s legs and feet. Add Eyes, Mouth, and whiskers with Black. Mix a Pink: White+Red. Use your baby brush to paint noses and add pink to ears. Use white to add highlights and use black for shadows.

Final Details:

Use Baby brush and add Mistletoe berries. Add white highlight to bow.

Zigzag brown under mice with baby brush.

Use Baby Brush and Black to add outline to berries, leaves, bow, and finish any other details.
